SoftBank acquires DigitalBridge for $4B as CEO warns of dot-com bubble echoes

SoftBank is acquiring DigitalBridge for approximately $4 billion, or $16 per share, representing a 15% premium over the stock price before the announcement. The deal, expected to close in the second half of 2026 pending regulatory approval, will give SoftBank control of an asset manager overseeing $108 billion in digital infrastructure assets, including data centers, cell towers, and fiber networks. DigitalBridge CEO Marc Ganzi will remain in charge as the company continues to operate as a standalone entity. Paradoxically, Ganzi warned against excess behavior in the sector, comparing the current AI frenzy to the late 1990s dot-com bubble, noting that loan-to-value ratios have climbed from 45% to 70-80% in some transactions.
