SEC revisits crypto custody rules – Can THIS unlock institutional demand?

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) submitted proposed amendments to the Custody Rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) on August 25, with publication expected no later than October 2026. This review comes after a White House meeting between President Donald J. Trump and crypto executives. In Q2 2026, institutional Bitcoin ETF holdings rose 7.5% to 535,723 BTC despite Bitcoin’s 14.2% decline. Institutional ownership proportion reached 44.2%, up from 38.4%. Custody fees range from 4 to 15 basis points annually, with insurance ranging from $200 million to $750 million.
