The SEC will pay $150,000 to settle a Coinbase-backed Freedom of Information Act lawsuit and release two previously withheld documents. The July 22 settlement also requires a review of records and text-message preservation practices. History Associates, working with Coinbase, filed the lawsuit on June 27, 2024. The case stems from the loss of former Chair Gary Gensler’s text messages between October 18, 2022 and September 6, 2023, confirmed by the agency’s inspector general in September 2025. Coinbase chief legal officer Paul Grewal called the outcome a win for transparency.
