Samsung forecasts chip shortage to extend through 2028, pushing customers toward long-term deals

Samsung Electronics announced during its Q2 2026 earnings call that the global memory chip shortage will worsen in 2027 before persisting through 2028. The semiconductor division saw profits surge over 250-fold year-over-year in Q2 2026, while overall net profits jumped 14 times. This situation is driven by explosive demand from AI data centers for high-bandwidth memory, creating a supply-demand gap that manufacturers struggle to close. Consequently, nearly all of Samsung’s customers are now requesting multi-year supply agreements, fundamentally shifting the traditional semiconductor procurement model.
