Ripple prepares XRP Ledger for quantum computing risks ahead of Q-Day

Ripple announced on April 20, 2026 a four-phase plan to make the XRP Ledger quantum-proof by 2028, becoming one of the first major blockchain networks to formally commit to a post-quantum security timeline. Google Quantum AI research published in March 2026 found that 500,000 physical qubits could break elliptic curve cryptography, the mathematical foundation securing private keys across virtually all blockchains. An independent audit found that only 0.03% of XRP’s total supply sits in dormant accounts with exposed public keys, a significantly lower exposure than Bitcoin, where coins in older pay-to-public-key addresses have fully visible public keys. Ripple is currently testing NIST-standard post-quantum algorithms ML-DSA and Dilithium in collaboration with Project Eleven, with testnet deployments expected throughout the first half of 2026. The partnership aims to benchmark performance and ensure that quantum resistance does not degrade network throughput, given that Dilithium signatures are roughly 40 times larger than current ECDSA signatures.
