Private investors drive record deal volumes in AI projects as crypto-AI convergence accelerates

Global venture investment hit a record 300 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2026, with approximately 242 billion dollars captured by artificial intelligence startups, representing 80% of the total and a 150% increase from the previous year. OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI raised 122 billion, 30 billion, and 20 billion dollars respectively during this quarter, while four of the five largest venture capital rounds ever recorded took place during this period. The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation invested approximately 40 million dollars in Zetrix AI, a Malaysian project focused on blockchain technologies for digital public infrastructure. India, Nigeria, and Egypt are experiencing faster AI adoption rates than developed markets, although the vast majority of capital remains concentrated in developed markets and a handful of mega-companies.
