Point72 plans to double Japan workforce and capital allocation

Point72 Asset Management, Steve Cohen’s hedge fund managing approximately $58.5 billion, plans to double its workforce and capital deployment in Japan over the coming years. The firm currently employs about 54 people in Japan out of a global headcount of 4,100, with ambitions to exceed 100 staff. In August 2025, Point72 hired Shinji Ogawa, formerly of JPMorgan, as Head of Japan. This expansion reflects a broader trend of major Western hedge funds ramping up their presence in Tokyo, driven by Japan’s corporate governance reforms aimed at improving capital efficiency among listed companies.
