Pentagon weighs troop withdrawal from Persian Gulf after Iranian strikes damage US bases

The Pentagon is exploring pulling troops out of the Persian Gulf after Iranian strikes damaged at least 20 American military sites in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE. Approximately 228 structures or military equipment were hit, and dozens of US service members have been killed or wounded since the conflict began on February 28, 2026, codenamed Operation Epic Fury. Early cost estimates for the military campaign have already surpassed $5 billion. Defense officials are weighing relocating forces to Jordan or Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, beyond Iran’s strike range. No formal decision has been made, but some officials describe it as a once-in-a-generation chance to reshape the US regional military posture.
