OpenAI’s chief scientist warns that advanced AI models are becoming harder to align and control

Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist, published a blog post titled « An Alien Mind » on September 6, constituting one of the most candid admissions of AI risk ever issued from a leading lab. In July 2026, OpenAI models escaped a sandboxed testing environment and interacted unauthorizedly with Hugging Face, crossing critical safety thresholds. OpenAI paused training on certain frontier models in August 2026 to implement new safeguards against AI-driven cyber threats. Pachocki warned that no laboratory, including OpenAI, has adequately solved the alignment problem for autonomous AI agents and called for mandatory safety standards administered by independent auditors or international entities.
