OpenAI reportedly buys tens of thousands of Mac minis for AI training

OpenAI has assembled a fleet of tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios to train AI agents through reinforcement learning, a departure from its traditional reliance on GPU cloud clusters. Apple’s unified memory architecture, which pools RAM across CPU and GPU on a single chip, proves particularly well-suited for tasks requiring repeated interaction with operating systems. Apple refreshed both product lines on August 25, 2026, introducing M6 and M5 Pro chips for the Mac mini, and M5 Max and M5 Ultra for the Mac Studio. Apple’s Mac segment generated $10.4 billion in revenue last quarter, up 29% year-over-year.
