Oil prices rise and analysts see Big Tech selloff linked to traders locking in gains

European and Asian markets were mixed Monday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 2.1% to 66,970.22 points, led by technology stocks. Oil prices rose 0.8% for Brent to $84.23 per barrel and 0.7% for WTI to $78.72, amid uncertainty in the Middle East as Israel rejected a Gaza deal proposed by President Trump and Iran suggested restricting traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign investors were selling Big Tech shares to lock in recent profits and rotate into other sectors. This week, all eyes will be on the U.S. CPI data for July, expected at 3.4% versus 3.5% in June. Friday’s U.S. jobs report showed an unexpected 23,000 job cut, raising hopes the Fed might delay rate hikes, with all three major indices rising and the S&P 500 hitting a new all-time high.
