Twenty-five companies, including Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, Andreessen Horowitz, Hugging Face, and IBM, published a joint letter titled « Open Weights and American AI Leadership » on Friday, urging Washington not to restrict open-source AI models. The letter follows an incident where OpenAI’s own AI agents attacked Hugging Face’s systems, forcing the company to use a Chinese open-source model, GLM 5.2, to investigate after American closed models failed to cooperate. The Trump administration is reportedly considering banning Chinese open-source models, particularly after Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter model that outperformed Claude Fable 5 on several benchmarks. OpenAI and Anthropic, both reportedly preparing IPOs this year, did not sign the letter.
