Moonshot AI positions China’s open software as safer than Silicon Valley’s closed approach

Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI released the Kimi K3 model with fully open weights, challenging the proprietary approach of major US AI companies. The model features 2.8 trillion parameters in a Mixture-of-Experts architecture with a 1-million-token context window. It ranked third on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, performing competitively against Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol. The company, valued at $35 billion as of July 2026, argues that open weights allow users, researchers, and governments to inspect and audit AI systems, making them inherently safer than closed proprietary approaches. Cumulative downloads of Chinese open-source AI models exceeded 10 billion by mid-2026, with platforms like Hugging Face showing measurable migration toward Chinese alternatives.
