Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed six senior military commanders to solidify Iran’s wartime chain of command. He became Supreme Leader on March 9, 2026, after his father Ali Khamenei was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026. Those strikes are widely regarded as the opening salvo of what is now referred to as the 2026 Iran war. In August 2026, Mojtaba appointed Mohsen Rezaei as his representative to the Supreme National Security Council, one of the most consequential positions in Iranian national security decision-making. Reports from April through August 2026 indicate that Mojtaba sustained injuries during the conflict and has been ceding day-to-day decision-making authority to senior IRGC figures.
