MEPs demand FIFA President Gianni Infantino appear before Parliament as boycott threats escalate

European Parliament members have drafted a letter demanding FIFA President Gianni Infantino appear before the European Parliament to answer allegations of US political influence in the organization’s decision-making. The investigation, launched on July 7, 2026, follows controversial decisions during the World Cup, including a red card against US player Folarin Balogun. On July 30-31, UEFA threatened to boycott all FIFA events unless Infantino dropped his private equity plans. Three of the six continental confederations, including UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, oppose this plan to sell 20% of FIFA’s commercial operations. The « FIFA Coin » token project, presented in February 2026, has still not materialized, and its future appears compromised by this institutional crisis.
