Nearly 4,000 BTC, worth approximately $320 million, were withdrawn from the Liquid Federation wallet in a security incident on Sunday, accounting for roughly 95% of the Bitcoin pegged into the sidechain. The actors, claiming to be white-hat hackers, are communicating with Blockstream through Bitcoin OP_RETURN messages and PGP-encrypted texts. Blockstream reached out at block 965,822, and they responded at block 965,869 proposing to return « most » of the funds, contingent on the vulnerability being fixed across the network. Ledger’s CTO Charles Guillemet noted that criminal groups would not typically attempt to contact their victims, suggesting a peaceful resolution may be possible.
