Lilian Weng rejoins OpenAI to work on recursive self-improvement models

Lilian Weng, former VP of Research and Safety at OpenAI, is returning to the company after leaving in November 2024. She spent nearly seven years at the organization and co-founded Thinking Machines Lab in February 2025 alongside Mira Murati, before stepping down from that lab in July 2026 due to health reasons and burnout. She will now focus on developing AI models capable of recursive self-improvement, a field seen as central to the pursuit of artificial general intelligence but raising profound safety and control questions.
