Lambda, a San Francisco-based AI cloud startup, has raised approximately $1 billion in private short-dated debt arranged by JPMorgan Chase to fund the purchase of Nvidia GPUs that will be leased to Microsoft under a multi-year contract, with lease revenue repaying the debt. The financing structure uses GPU assets and expected contract revenue as collateral, a playbook pioneered by competitors like CoreWeave that allows rapid scaling without purely dilutive equity raises. The Moody’s Baa2 rating on Lambda’s combined billion-dollar facilities signals institutional investor appetite for this asset class. Lambda closed an additional $926 million senior secured term loan on August 27, 2026, described as the first large-scale private-cloud GPU asset-backed SPV financing by a neocloud provider, establishing a structural precedent for the industry. Founded in 2012, Lambda aims to reach 3 gigawatts of compute capacity by 2030.
