Moonshot AI, a Chinese artificial intelligence lab, has released its Kimi K3 model for free download, totaling over 1.5 terabytes of data and presented as the largest model ever published in open access. However, the custom license that accompanies these files imposes commercial restrictions: any company reselling access to the model and exceeding 20 million dollars in revenue over twelve months must sign a commercial agreement with Moonshot, and beyond 100 million monthly active users, the Kimi K3 name must appear visibly in the product. Strictly internal use remains exempt from these constraints. Researcher Nathan Lambert criticized this approach, stating that the license borrows open source terminology while clearly blocking free large-scale commercial exploitation. This strategy comes as Moonshot prepares a stock market listing with a targeted valuation of 50 billion dollars.
