The number of Danish banks has fallen from approximately 160 in 2005 to around 50 today, marking two decades of intensive banking consolidation. According to Jyske Bank CEO Lars Stensgaard Mørch, this wave could be coming to an end thanks to artificial intelligence, which allows smaller institutions to compete without having to grow. AI and shared technology platforms reduce the competitive advantage that size once provided, while fixed compliance and risk management costs had been the main argument for mergers. Jyske Bank highlighted in its Q1 2026 interim report its commitment to developing AI applications across productivity and customer-facing advisory services. Notable recent deals included Nykredit Realkredit’s acquisition of Spar Nord Bank for $3.5 billion in late 2024, and the formation of AL Sydbank in 2025 through the combination of three separate lenders.
