Japheth Dillman convicted of wire fraud in crypto fund scheme that stole nearly $1 million

Japheth Dillman was convicted by a federal jury in California of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his role in operating Block Bits Fund I, LP, a crypto trading fund that raised approximately $960,000 from over 20 investors. The fund promised investors a proprietary autotrading bot capable of digital asset arbitrage, but the bot was never operational. Instead of deploying capital into the promised algorithmic strategy, Dillman and co-founder David Mata redirected the funds into high-risk ventures, including the AML Bitcoin initial coin offering, resulting in estimated losses of around $508,000. Dillman faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of conviction. His co-founder David Mata, who pleaded guilty and testified against him, agreed to disgorge $75,000 and accept a lifetime bar from the financial industry.
