Baltimore filed lawsuits against prediction market operators Kalshi and Polymarket on August 13, accusing both companies of offering illegal sports betting in the city. The complaints allege that the platforms allow residents to bet on game outcomes without the licenses required in Maryland, while avoiding the oversight, taxation, and consumer protections imposed on licensed operators. The city is seeking civil penalties, injunctive relief, restitution for affected consumers, and disgorgement of alleged ill-gotten profits. Both companies are already facing multiple other legal disputes: Kalshi has been sued by the New York State Attorney General and Polymarket lost banking services from JPMorgan Chase. A separate consumer protection lawsuit has also been filed against Polymarket in Washington, D.C.
