Isabel Schnabel, a German economist and member of the European Central Bank’s Executive Board, is planning to leave her position before her term expires on December 31, 2027, to take a role at the International Monetary Fund. A member of the Executive Board since January 1, 2020, she oversees market operations and has been among the most vocal advocates for keeping interest rates elevated amid euro-area inflation hovering around 2.9%, slightly above the ECB’s 2% target. She notably spoke at the Jackson Hole symposium in August 2026, calling on central banks to incorporate blockchain technology into their operations. Germany, which holds the Executive Board seat she occupies, will need to nominate a successor, though no departure timeline has been confirmed at this stage.
