Iranian hackers suspected of attacking 30 Minnesota water companies

Iranian hacker collective CyberAv3ngers is the main suspect in a series of cyberattacks that hit 30 water companies across Minnesota this week. Cybersecurity firm Tenable identified the group as responsible and noted the timing aligns with a July 22 warning from US agency CISA, which alerted about Iranian operations targeting internet-connected devices in water, energy, and government sectors. Minnesota’s state IT agency confirmed the disruptions were part of a coordinated cyberattack. US authorities have not yet formally attributed the attacks, but internal CyberAv3ngers documents leaked in 2025 revealed the group operated as a state-directed effort with suspected links to another group called Moses Staff.
