‘I Did Everything Right’: Coldcard Victims Recount Losing Life Savings

Canadian Jonathan Goodman lost 18.25 BTC, worth approximately $1.6 million Canadian dollars, in just seven minutes on July 29 after a firmware bug at hardware wallet manufacturer Coldcard made generated seeds guessable. In total, roughly 1,816 BTC, valued at approximately $114 million, were stolen from more than 5,200 addresses across four waves of coordinated attacks since the flaw was disclosed on July 30. Victims claim they followed all security protocols: hardware wallet purchased from a reputable manufacturer, seeds generated offline, backups stamped into steel, never entered on a connected device. Manufacturer Coinkite released patched firmware, halted shipments, and destroyed remaining inventory, while CEO Rodolfo Novak apologized without clarifying whether users would be compensated.
