‘Harvest their data and hide the truth from the public’: Four states seek billions from Meta over child safety practices

Four U.S. states (California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Mexico) are suing Meta in a California federal court, seeking billions of dollars in damages. The states accuse the tech giant of deliberately designing addictive features for children on Instagram and Facebook, contributing to the youth mental health crisis. They also allege that Meta routinely collected data on children under 13 without parental consent, violating federal law. The trial, expected to last six weeks, will include testimony from CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives. Meta has said it could face up to $1.4 trillion in damages if it loses the case.
