Google’s AI leadership shakeup rattles markets as Demis Hassabis steps back from day-to-day operations

Alphabet announced a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence leadership on August 5. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and Nobel laureate, stepped down from his operational role to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. On the same day, Jeff Dean and three other prominent researchers, including Oriol Vinyals, Quoc Le, and Sanjay Ghemawat, left the company to start a new AI startup. Alphabet shares fell 4% following the announcement, reflecting investor concerns about execution risks and Google’s ability to maintain its pace of innovation in the AI race.
