Google DeepMind has released WeatherNext 2 and its specialized variant WeatherNext Cyclones, next-generation AI weather forecasting models. WeatherNext 2 outperforms previous models on 99.9 percent of tested meteorological variables, while the Cyclones model provides approximately one additional day of lead time over conventional systems for cyclone track, intensity, and size predictions. Trained on ERA5 and HRES data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the models use Functional Generative Networks to produce 15-day ensemble forecasts at 0.25-degree resolution. Open-sourced on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, they are now integrated into Google Cloud via BigQuery and Earth Engine, with a mini version that runs on a single TPU in Google Colab. The Cyclones model’s performance was validated during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, notably for Hurricane Melissa.
