German digital rights organization HateAid filed a criminal complaint against Meta, Luxottica Group (Ray-Ban, Oakley), and German retailers including Fielmann and MediaMarkt, alleging violations of federal privacy laws. The complaint targets Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, which can record video and audio of nearby people without their knowledge, violating Germany’s TDDDG. HateAid is seeking a complete sales ban in Germany and mandatory safety features such as visible camera indicators. An estimated 41 million Germans have worn these glasses. Violations can carry fines, profit confiscation, and up to two years imprisonment. Meta has not publicly responded to the complaint.
