Google DeepMind’s Gemma model family reached 900 million total downloads by July 2026, just sixteen months after its February 2024 launch. Gemma 4, released in April 2026, generated over 300 million downloads on its own, accounting for more than a third of the family’s cumulative total. The family spans models from 2 billion to 27 billion parameters, including specialized variants such as ShieldGemma for content moderation and MedGemma for medical applications. Over 70,000 fine-tuned variants are hosted on Hugging Face, representing a form of distributed R&D that Google does not fund directly.
