FTX Founder Sam Bankman-Fried Takes Fraud Conviction to Supreme Court

Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn his 2023 fraud conviction. He is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence. His lawyers are challenging both the conviction, arguing the trial court improperly prevented evidence about FTX customer repayments, and the approximately $11 billion forfeiture order, claiming it violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition on excessive fines. The Supreme Court must first decide whether to hear the case, as it receives thousands of petitions annually but agrees to hear only about 60.
