Federal Reserve Chairman Warsh watches AI token prices for clues on productivity and inflation

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh used his Jackson Hole keynote on August 28 to highlight AI token prices as a potential leading indicator for business adoption of artificial intelligence. AI labs’ token sales have surpassed $100 billion, representing growth of more than 500% from the prior year. Warsh described AI as a potential « new factor of production, » alongside labor, capital, and land. However, the Fed chairman emphasized that AI’s productivity effects remain uncertain and are not currently influencing monetary policy decisions. The token pricing dynamic Warsh flagged could serve as an early warning system to assess whether AI is creating genuine economic value or becoming a commoditized utility.
