Extreme drought and heat this summer have devastated ecosystems and businesses across Europe, from fish ponds in Hungary to Lake Pristava in Slovenia. In Hungary, approximately 99% of lands are affected by severe drought, with 1,588 hectares of ponds dried out and nearly 280 metric tons of fish dead, causing estimated losses of 1.3 billion forints ($4.2 million). In Slovenia, emergency teams have pumped 8 million liters of water into Lake Pristava in an attempt to save fish. Fish producers and fishermen in several countries, including Romania, the Czech Republic and Bosnia, are also suffering considerable losses, and desertification now threatens vast regions such as the Great Hungarian Plain.
