EU plans €10B for seven AI gigafactories to compete globally

The European Union is planning to build seven AI gigafactories, each designed to house more than 100,000 processors dedicated to training frontier AI models. The initial investment is estimated at approximately 10 billion euros, part of a broader 20 billion euro allocation from the InvestAI program, announced by Ursula von der Leyen in February 2025. This initiative aims to reduce Europe’s dependence on American cloud providers by building large-scale European compute infrastructure. The official call for expressions of interest is expected in summer 2026, with 77 proposals already submitted by 16 member states.
