Ethereum: An EIP to Protect ETH Staking Against Quantum Attacks

Share

Ethereum developers have submitted an EIP to protect ETH staking against the threat of quantum attacks. This initiative safeguards over $110 billion, representing 42.4 million ETH, currently deposited in staking. The proposal aims to modify the existing deposit contract, whose limitations (48 bytes for public keys, 96 bytes for signatures) cannot accommodate post-quantum cryptographic systems requiring up to 8,192 bytes per key and metadata. If approved, new cryptographic mechanisms could be integrated in parallel with the current BLS12-381 system, with the prospect of disabling it permanently over time.
