ECB says digital euro app will exceed EU accessibility standards

The European Central Bank (ECB) announced that its planned digital euro app will exceed the accessibility requirements of the European Accessibility Act. The proposed design includes features such as enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen-reader compatibility, time-out warnings and reduced motion settings. The standalone app will serve as a fallback if bank apps fail and allow users to switch payment service providers without learning a new application. On July 14, the ECB selected 36 payment service providers to participate in a 12-month pilot scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. Some privacy advocates and lawmakers have criticized the project, fearing increased government surveillance of payments.
