Dutch central bank moves gold to London as geopolitical hedging goes mainstream

De Nederlandsche Bank relocated 86 tonnes of gold, valued between €10 billion and €12 billion, from reserves held in New York and Ottawa to the Bank of England in London between March and August 2026. Of this total, 27 tonnes were physically transported through the DNB’s facility in Zeist, Netherlands, while the remaining 59 tonnes were sold in New York and repurchased in London to avoid the cost of remelting bars that did not meet current London market standards. As a result, London’s share of the DNB’s gold reserves rose from 18.1% to 32.1%, with the DNB holding a total of 612.4 tonnes worth €72.2 billion at the end of 2025. This decision comes amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada and mirrors a similar move by the Bank of France, which had relocated its gold from New York between July 2025 and January 2026.
