The US Department of Justice has been investigating Andreessen Horowitz for nearly a year for violations of Section 8 of the Clayton Act, which prohibits the same director from simultaneously serving on the boards of two competing companies. Ben Horowitz, the fund’s co-founder, sits on Databricks’ board while Martin Casado, a partner at the fund, sits on Fivetran’s board, a company that acquired dbt Labs in June 2026. Marc Andreessen, a close ally of Donald Trump appointed as science and technology advisor and to the Defense Policy Board, is also under scrutiny. The DOJ has not made any final decision and the case could be resolved by a simple board departure, but the investigation targets a strategic ally of the president at a time when a16z influences US crypto regulation. The fund remains one of the largest crypto venture capital players with stakes in Coinbase, Uniswap and Solana.
