Digital Reef’s proposed London datacentre could emit 1M tonnes of CO2 annually, clashing with UK net zero goals

A hyperscale data centre proposed by Digital Reef in East Havering, outer London, could emit over one million tonnes of CO2 annually, according to planning documents. The £5.3 billion complex would span 175 hectares of green belt land with up to 600 MW of power capacity and 330,000 to 400,000 square meters of floorspace. This carbon footprint would be roughly equivalent to 27,000 transatlantic flights, representing about 0.25% of the UK’s total territorial emissions. The project has been marketed as a potential zero carbon facility despite these projections, placing it on a direct collision course with the UK’s legally binding net-zero targets, with a final council decision still pending.
