DEX trading volume grew roughly 9,260x from 2019 to a record $4.7 trillion in 2025, before moderating to $1.63 trillion year-to-date in 2026. The market is now characterized by major liquidity fragmentation across multiple blockchains, protocols, and execution environments, with no single actor dominating all transactions. Over 90% of SwapSpace users interacted with more than one blockchain network in 2026, up from 72.5% in 2024. Ethereum’s share of global DEX volume fell from 46.2% in 2021 to 19.3% in 2025, while Solana reached 33.3%. This growing fragmentation has led to the emergence of intent-based execution models like UniswapX or 1inch Fusion, which aim to simplify user experience by hiding routing complexity.
