DeepMind loses sole non-US executive overseeing AI development as Hassabis steps back

Demis Hassabis, the London-based co-founder of DeepMind, stepped down from daily operations on August 5, 2026, and will now serve as chair of the lab and chief scientist at Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously chief technology officer, became senior vice president and reports directly to Sundar Pichai. Jeff Dean also left Google alongside four leading researchers to found Discover Loop, an independent AI startup backed by Alphabet investment and a cloud partnership. Alphabet shares fell approximately 4 % following the announcement. For the first time in Google DeepMind’s history, no non-American executive oversees the company’s AI development.
