Crypto Wealth Draws Violence as Attackers Seize $30 Million in 2026

Violent attacks on crypto holders have stolen an estimated $30 million in the first half of 2026, putting the year on track to surpass the record $58 million stolen in 2025. France has emerged as the global hotspot, recording 30 incidents in the first half of 2026, up from 19 in all of 2025. This surge is traced to a 2024 data breach where a French tax official allegedly stole and sold dossiers on high-net-worth holders, plus a breach at Waltio affecting roughly 50,000 users. While kidnappings remain the most common category at 52%, home invasions have risen to 37% of incidents. However, attacker success rates have dropped sharply to 26% through June 2026, down from 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024.
