In August 2026, the cryptocurrency sector experienced 50 significant hacks, a 67% increase from July’s 30 incidents. Despite this surge in frequency, total losses reached approximately $136.3 million, down 49.5% from the $270 million stolen in July. The TectonicFi exploit dominated the month with $74 million stolen, accounting for more than half of all losses and ranking as the fourth largest crypto theft of 2026 so far. Other notable incidents included Termlabs ($8.5M), Moonwell ($8.7M), Coinsbuy ($7.9M), and TAC ($7.5M). These figures reveal a concerning trend: the frequency of security breaches has significantly increased, even as dollar losses have decreased.
