Crypto Exchange Shakeout Deepens as BitMEX, BitMart, and AscendEX Exit the Market

Three centralized crypto exchange platforms have announced their exit from the market within weeks: BitMEX revealed its planned closure in September, BitMart initiated its wind-down, and AscendEX had already ceased operations earlier this month. BitMEX, which once commanded 57% of the global derivatives market at its peak, saw its position erode after U.S. authorities charged the exchange in 2020 for violations of anti-money laundering laws. The combination of subdued trading activity, rising compliance costs, and increasing liquidity concentration toward a handful of global operators is intensifying challenges for smaller and mid-sized platforms, signaling a new phase of industry consolidation.
