Two studies by World Weather Attribution and published in Scientific Reports found that climate change significantly increased wildfire risk in Southern Europe. Human-caused climate change made Spain’s record-sized wildfire 20 times more likely and doubled the chances in France. Warming over 26 years tripled severe fire risk conditions in Spain and increased them by 40% in France. Extreme fire-prone weather days in Southern Europe have more than doubled from about 10 to 25 per year, with those days being about 50% more intense than from 1981 to 2010. Scientists warn that as long as fossil fuels continue to be burned, fire weather conditions will only get worse.
