Chinese government accelerates humanoid robot funding despite tech limitations

The Chinese government committed at least $230 million to humanoid robotics procurement in the first half of 2026, a 40-fold increase from the first half of 2024. China manufactured between 12,800 and 20,000 humanoid robots in 2025, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of global output, with an official target of 100,000 units for 2026. Morgan Stanley revised its forecast to 50,000 units, while analysts highlight a critical training data deficit, with hundreds of thousands of hours available against an estimated 100 million hours needed. State-owned enterprise State Grid announced $1 billion in planned investments in humanoid robotics applications, as over 150 manufacturers compete in this rapidly expanding market.
