Canada’s counter-tariffs on US steel, appliances, and other sectors will take effect September 8, covering about 5.5% of Canada’s total exports to the US. Carney pledged to announce support measures for affected workers and businesses in the coming week, potentially extending over several years. Ottawa has signed over 20 new trade and security deals since 2025 to reduce dependence on the US market, which absorbs nearly 70% of Canadian exports.
