Canada condemns Iran’s actions, pledges support for G7 sanctions

Canada condemned Iran on September 6, 2026, for its destabilizing activities in the Middle East, including threats to vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, its nuclear program, and financial support for proxy groups. Over 1,500 vessels are stranded as a consequence of the crisis affecting the strait, which carries roughly 20% of the world’s daily petroleum supply. Canada has sanctioned 232 individuals and 260 entities under its Special Economic Measures Act, bringing the total to 492 since 2010. Ottawa also voiced explicit support for US-led operations to reopen the strait and dismantle Iran’s financial infrastructure.
