Anthropic used a new version of its Mythos (Preview) model to identify hidden vulnerabilities in cryptographic algorithms designed to protect blockchains. The first attack significantly weakens HAWK, a post-quantum digital signature system competing to become a US federal standard via NIST. The second attack reveals a new method against a simplified version of AES, the world’s most widely used symmetric encryption, which could affect the security of certain wallets. The model operated largely autonomously, at an estimated cost of approximately $100,000 in API usage per discovery. Major blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana are not directly threatened in the near term.
