Bybit filed a civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against North Korea, its military intelligence agency (RGB), and the Lazarus Group, the alleged perpetrators of the largest cryptocurrency theft in history. On February 21, 2025, over 400,000 ETH and stETH, worth approximately $1.5 billion, were stolen through a compromised computer at multisig wallet provider Safe{Wallet}. Bybit obtained a preliminary injunction freezing the assets of identified on-chain intermediaries. According to Chainalysis, North Korea has stolen a total of $6.75 billion in crypto assets, including $2.02 billion in 2025, largely from the Bybit hack, funds reinvested into the regime’s weapons program.
